I know that in some states you've mentioned you will lose the benefit of the Homestead Exemption protection against creditors if you put your own residence in a Land Trust, is California one of these states?

This issue is more a "local" one. Each county makes this determination. Check with the county in which you are recording your Deed to Trustee and see what their "policy" is.
