Fraud alert issued after mortgage files dumped

Consumers who did business with Cove Creek Mortgage Co. could become victims of identity theft after company files were thrown into a Dumpster over the weekend, officials warned.
The Arapahoe district attorney's office issued the "fraud alert" after passers-by discovered files belonging to the company in the trash at 88 Inverness Drive East, Building F.
In the files were applications that included names, addresses, Social Security numbers, and bank- and investment-account information of Cove Creek customers.
The DA's office is advising anyone who used Cove Creek Mortgage to place a fraud alert on their credit reports, said Kathleen Walsh, spokeswoman for District Attorney Carol Chambers.
The DA's office received a tip on its fraud-assistance line Monday morning about the discarded files. The office verified that the sensitive files were in the Dumpster and contacted the Arapahoe County Sheriff's Office, which took over the investigation.
Walsh said the property manager for the building told investigators that Cove Creek's owner abandoned his office in January and that his location was unknown. As a result, the property manager cleaned out the office and put all items from the office in two Dumpsters.
The sheriff's office has since been in touch with the Cove Creek owner and arranged for his retrieval of the files.
For further information, consumers should call the fraud-assistance line at 720-874-8547.
