Bleech!!! A simple guide to cleaning

By: Erik Olson

"BLEACH!!!" -Pete Youngs

As stated by Pete Youngs, this product is a cheap and effective cleaning solution when dealing in many areas of the house. Most cleaning supply products that are used in kitchens and baths or even in outdoors contain a level of bleach. Often times, bleach is the leading active ingredient and the most effective part of the cleaning product. With that said why spend the money for these cleaning supplies when you can buy bleach and dilute it with water for less than half the price?

The average cleaning supply costs around $4 a bottle, where a gallon of bleach costs around $3. If you were to take the percentage of bleach in those cleaning supplies and compare that to a gallon of bleach you are paying over $50 for those cleaning supplies to equal your 1 gallon of bleach.

I know you are going to say, "Well those cleaning supplies have more ingredients that help create suds or scrubbing power" and you are right! For that situation I recommend one product that will allow you to clean with bleach and still save you money. Soft Scrub! This is one of the most effective cleaners on the market for scrubbing kitchens and baths. I have used it in all of my rental properties and on all colors of surfaces. To this day I have not run into an issue with color fading; however, this product will ruin your clothes!!! Do not wear nice or dark clothing unless you don't mind bleach stains.

Back to using bleach by itself. Bleach is also a common ingredient found in mildew and mold cleaner. Instead of buying that bottle of mildew/mold cleaner, buy bleach and dilute it to about a 25% bleach 75% water mix. This will be strong enough to kill the mold and mildew right before your eyes. This trick will work in the following areas:
  1. Water stains on ceilings
  2. Mold from water damage
  3. Mildew in bathrooms or wet areas
  4. Mold and mildew on siding (Beware! do not use on colored vinyl siding unless its white)
  5. Gutters and overhangs
These are just some of the many uses for bleach.  Again, do not spend tons of money on supplies that contain bleach when dealing with your houses (unless you have stock in that company or like to support big business). Also, when dealing with bleach always remember that it will remove color from some materials, to be safe try it in a small unnoticable area first.
