Identity theft scammers are getting more creative

By: nbc 15 news Madison

Identity theft affects millions Americans each year especially around holidays like Labor Day.

Financial experts say anytime commerce increases, so does the frequency of ID theft.

While dumpster diving is still the number one source of identity theft, scammers are getting more creative.

Tom Szmanda V.P. of Amcore Bank says, "For example, if you're in a restaurant, and you're using your credit card, your waiter may leave with that card to go run the card, and the minute they leave, it's out your sight-you've lost control of your i.d. and that could be scanned-that card-it could be copied, and information could be used weeks, months later down the road.

He says to protect your identity, get a copy of your credit report, regularly check your credit card and bank statements, and always keep your receipts.

Also, never give out personal information over the phone
